Five-two. That is the scoreline that keeps floating to the top of this season so far: Ipswich Town at home on 30 August, seven goals in an afternoon, and the only one of the five league games on file that ended with everyone getting exactly what they came for. The difficulty is what sits either side of it.
Take the league run in order and the shape is a spike in the middle. Lost 2-0 away at Hull City on 22 August — the very first afternoon of the season, and, with the derby, one of two games of the five on file in which United did not score at all. Then the Ipswich day: 5-2 at home, eight days later, five goals and a ground making all the right noise. Then away at Everton on 6 September, 2-2, a point taken from a game with four goals in it. Then the derby: 1-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford on the thirteenth. Then, on the twentieth, 1-1 away to Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Sandwiched into that last week was the Carabao Cup, and it makes ugly reading beside the league: Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on 16 September, 2-3 to them. Two defeats in four days at the same ground — 1-0 in the league, 3-2 in the cup — and a fortnight in which the noise at Old Trafford was mostly of the wrong sort.

Eighteen goals across the four games. Whatever else is going on, that fixture does not do nil-nil.
What the table says, plainly: five played, one won, two drawn, two lost. Eight scored, eight against. Five points from fifteen. Twelfth.
What comes next is not in these records — no fixture list, and the competitions named for this club are the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. Five league games in, the thing everyone can agree on is that the five-two was real. The disagreement starts with everything else.
