The main conversation.
The noise before kickoff is the part the broadcast never gets. You feel it in the floor of the stand a full minute before the teams come out. What I love is that it is not organised. Nobody cues it. It builds on its own and then the whistle cuts through it.
Three matches running now the ball goes left and comes back. The overload is there but the third man never arrives, so the winger ends up isolated against two. I would rather see the switch played earlier than another sideways pass. Curious whether anyone else is seeing the same shape.
Not asking about the result. Asking about the trip: the walk to the ground, the pub you always find, the stand that actually makes noise. For me it is the one where the away end is low and close to the pitch. You can hear the players talking to each other.
Cover in the middle, not another forward. We have been lucky with injuries in one position and it has hidden a real gap. A loan with an option would be sensible. Spending big mid-season rarely fixes the thing you think it will.
A generation got priced out quietly and nobody announced it. If the same seats are empty every week, that is the answer to the question the club keeps asking. Cheaper standing areas would do more for the atmosphere than any campaign.
Nothing else in football is like it. Strangers holding on to each other, everyone on the same row they were not on a second earlier. I have been going twenty years and it still does the same thing to me.
